Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the accuracy of three different horizontal axis marking techniques using iTrace™ surgical workstation (Tracey Technologies Corp., Houston, TX).

Setting:

Vision institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

Patients were divided into three groups randomly for corneal horizontal axis marking using different techniques in the sitting position. Marking with non-pendulum corneal marker with surgeon’s bare eye , marking with pendulum attached marker and marking and marking with an assistance of horizontal slit beam were the three techniques. Immediate after horizontal corneal horizontal marking, all patients were examined using iTraceToric planner for analyzing rotational deviation and vertical deviation.

Results:

Total 90 eyes were divided into three groups. Marking with pendulum attached marker induced the least rotational deviation to the reference level (mean 4.94 degrees) and the least vertical deviation (mean 0.70 mm).Marking with bare eye induced the most rotational deviation (mean 5.40 degrees) and with horizontal slit beam induced the most vertical deviation.(mean 0.18 mm)

Conclusions:

All of three marking techniques induced certain rotational and vertical deviation compared to machine estimated reference level. However, pendulum attached marker provided relatively accurate horizontal axis mark compared with other methods
