Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual and biocompatibility outcomes of hydrophobic, hydrophilic and silicone foldable lenses over 10 years following phacoemulsification surgery in uncomplicated eyes

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Scarborough Hospital, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Methods:

In a 10-year audit of the original prospective, consecutive study, 120 eyes were implanted with one of three intraocular lenses (40 in each group): hydrophobic AcrySof MA30BA (Alcon); hydrophilic Centerflex 570H (Rayner Intraocular Lenses); and the silicone SI-30 NB (Allergan). Patients underwent routine phacoemulsification through a clear-corneal tunnel, and IOL placement in the bag. Patients were seen at standard postoperative intervals out to 2 years. They were contacted to return for a 10-year follow-up visit. Visual acuity on Snellen chart, as well as slit lamp examinations were performed to assess centration, lens material and posterior capsular opacification. One way ANOVA test with Tukey and Fisher post-hoc tests were performed for statistical analysis.

Results:

At the 10-year follow-up, 13 eyes were available in the AcrySof group, 14 eyes in the Centerflex group and 12 eyes in the SI-30NB group. The mean distance best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.83 ±0.313 in the AcrySof group, 1.10 ±0.295 in the Centerflex group and 0.89 ±0.294 in the SI-30NB group. Centerflex group achieved better visual acuity compared to AcrySof (p<0.05). The rate of observed decentration was most significant in the SI-30NB group and least significant in the Centerflex group. Each eye in AcrySof group showed glistenings compared to none in Centerflex group. Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) was lowest in the AcrySof group but difference was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

At 10 years following phacoemulsification, AcrySof group showed universal glistenings but lower PCO rate; Centerflex group better visual acuity, clear lens material but higher PCO rate and SI-30NB group high decentration. Difference in the PCO rate was not statistically significant
