Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare an intraocular straylight between normal or early cataract cases with a good visual acuity and pseudophakic eyes and to compare straylight before and after cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, to investigate the effect of lens extraction on intraocular straylight.

Setting:

The Catholic University of Korea, St. Mary’s Hospital, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

Ages, best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), and intraocular straylight values were measured in 197 normal eyes (Group A), and in 59 cataractous eyes (Group B) before and after cataract surgery. Intraocular straylight values were measured using the C-quant straylight meter (Oculus GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany).

Results:

The mean straylight values of group A were 1.22±0.01 log(s). Straylight values have a tendency to increase with age, but the correlation between BCVA and straylight values was not statistically significant (r=0.18). The mean BCVA of group B were 0.49±0.03, 0.18±0.02 logMAR before and after cataract surgery, respectively. And the mean straylight values were 1.79±0.06, 1.28±0.02 log(s) before and after cataract surgery, respectively. Especially, the mean straylight values of selected 51 eyes who were in 60~80 ages of group A and B were 1.36±0.02 log(s) and 1.29±0.02 log(s), respectively. The differences between these selected 51 eyes of group A and B were statistically significant, and straylight values were significantly lower in pseudophakic eyes (p<0.05) than in non-cataractous phakic eyes.

Conclusions:

In normal eyes with a good visual acuity, straylight values increases with increasing age. Lens extraction decreased straylight values in normal eyes as well as in cataractous eyes, but the change of straylight value seemed to be independent of visual acuity.
