Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate the quality of images obtained with different multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) compared to monofocal IOLs by developing an optoelectronic test bench including an artificial eye.

Setting:

Eye Clinic Trieste

Methods:

An experimental opto-electronic test bench has been realized following the Gullstrand eye model and ISO 11979-2 norm. The system include an electro-opto-mechanical device that simulates the optical and geometric characteristics of the human eye. The PMMA artificial cornea has been realized with optical and geometric properties similar to those of a real cornea. Multifocal and monofocal IOLs were compared evaluating the Visual Information Fidelity (V.I.F.) criterion and the quality of different images at different pupil diameters. A relevant software was realized to capture, store images and evaluate their quality in accordance with established criteria.

Results:

V.I.F. values and quality of image of distant focus were lower for multifocal IOLs than monofocal IOLs at all tested pupil diameters. At intermediate distance V.I.F. values of multifocal IOLs showed a slight increase compared with the monofocal at 6.1 mm pupil diameter and considerable improvement at 2.6 mm. V.I.F. and image quality of near focus were higher for multifocal than monofocal IOLs at all pupil diameters.

Conclusions:

This opto-electronic test bench allows to determine the quality of images transmitted by multifocal and monofocal intraocular lenses in different refractive and optical conditions. V.I.F. and image quality of distance focus produced by a multifocal IOL are lower at any given pupil aperture when compared to monofocal IOL. The intermediate and near foci showed a better V.I.F. and quality of image using multifocal IOLs. Pupil diameter affects the quality of images especially for intermediate distances.
