Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the changes in photopic and scotopic pupil size after implantation of an Artisan phakic intraocular lens for correction of high myopia.

Setting:

Yonsei Plus Eye Center, Sungnam, Korea

Methods:

Twenty eight myopic eyes of 14 patients were included in the study. Pupil size was measured under photopic condition using Orbscan II and scotopic condition after 10 min of dark adaptation and was measured using Zywave aberrometer (Bausch & Lomb)

Results:

The pupil size was measured at 1, 3, and 12 months after surgery. The mean photopic pupil diameter was 4.77+/-0.83 mm before surgery and 4.30+/-0.72 mm (p=0.003) at 12 months after surgery respectively. The mean scotopic pupil diameter was 6.55+/-1.06 mm before surgery and 5.84+/-0.90 mm (p=0.004) at 12 months after surgery respectively, which both reduction of changes were statistically significant. At 12 months after surgery, 9.85% of pupil size was reduced compare to pre-operation in photopic condition and 10.84% of pupil size was reduced in scotopic condition, respectively, too.

Conclusions:

The iris-fixated intraocular lens mechanically limited pupil dilation in both photopic and scotopic condition. Reduction of post-operative scotopic pupil condition compare to pre-operation was greater than those of photopic condition.
