Abstract Details

"Purpose:

To determine the effectiveness of the Catapulse System in Cataract Removal

Setting:

Mendez Vision Institute, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Methods:

30 consecutive patients with nuclear cataract grade 1-3 were selected. Rutine preopereative exams that included endothelial cell count, were performed in all patientes. Two opposite 1.2 mm stab wound incisions and one 2.2 mm main incision are made. Traditional continuous circular capsulorrexis hidrodisection, hidrodelamination and pre-fracture of the nucleus are preformed. Using the controlled pulsed vacume of the catapulse system each of the nucleus sections are absorbed. Bimanual cortex aspiration and intraocular lens is placed in the capsular bag. One month postoperative endothelial cell count was performed in all patients.

Results:

All patients had clear corneas and minimal inflammation in the anterior chamber in their next day visit. No complications in 30 cases. One month postoperative endothelial cell loss was 7.3

Conclusions:

The procedure is similar to phacoemulsification but with out ultrasound energy. This caused a less inflamed eye on the postoperative visits. The catapulse cataract removal system is efficient for cataract surgery
