Abstract Details

Purpose:

As generally known, patients with cornea guttata are more prone to accelerated endothelial loss even after uneventful phacoemulsification. With this study we aimed to assess the visual outcome for such patients and possible factors associated with poor visual outcome.

Setting:

St Erik Eye Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden

Methods:

Through The Swedish National Cataract Register we identified all patients with guttata that underwent phacoemulsification between 2008 and 2010. Only one operated eye without other eye diseases was included in the study. The patients were followed up by vision test, eye examination, endothelial cell count and subjective vision evaluation. They were compared with healthy cataract operated eyes matched by gender and age.

Results:

The group included 49 patients, 5 of whom needed a keratoplasty during the period. Median vision after 2-4 years was 0,8 (0,2-1,3) compared with 1,0 (0,5-1,3) in the control group. The difference was statistically significant (p<0,001)

Conclusions:

Although the majority of patients with guttata also gain vision after phacoemulsification they present with statistically significant lower vision acuity already 2-4 years after surgery. Almost 10% needed corneal transplantation under this period.
