Abstract Details

Purpose:

To asses the long term status of endothelial cell density (ECD), in patients unilaterally implanted with a collagen co-pollimer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens, comparing with the non operated eye.

Setting:

Instituto Oftalmológico Fernįndez-Vega. Oviedo. Spain

Methods:

Retrospective study of a sample of 54 patients, 44 female and 10 male, with a mean age of 34±7 years. The considered inclusion criteria were: to have underwent a myopic ICL surgery in one any eye while no surgery at all in the contralateral eye, the absence of previous or postoperative diseases that could can affect the ECD in any of both eyes, and ECD count made, at least, one and eight years after surgery. Lenses implanted were myopic ICL model V4 (Staar Surgical AG, Nidau, Switzerland) with a power range between -22.50 and -4.50 diopters. No intraoperative complications were observed during or after the surgery. ECD was assessed with the SP-2000P non-contact specular microscope (Topcon Corp. Tokio, Japón). Image analysis was performed with Imagenet 2000 (Topcon Corp. Tokio, Japón).

Results:

Mean preoperative ECD was 2735±516 cells/mm2 and 2746±519 cells/mm2 for operated and non-operated eyes respectively. At the one-year visit an ECD loss of 8.5% was observed in the operated eyes, with a mean of 2503 cells/mm2. At the same visit the mean ECD of the non-operated eye was 2644 cells/mm2, which represents a 0.36% loss and that has been reported in the literature as the natural loss due to aging. At the eighth year visit a loss of 5.85% was reported in the operated eyes while the non-operated had a lost of 2.65%. The mean ECD were 2540±419 cells/mm2 and 2613±434 cells/mm2 respectively. During the follow up period none of the patients suffered any kind of medical condition that might have affected the ECD.

Conclusions:

The decline of ECD in eyes implanted with ICL seems to stabilize with time until a rate similar to the natural loss (0.3%), so we can conclude that implantation of these lenses has little, or no effect, over ECD at long term.
