Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to assess the visual and refractive outcomes at 1-year on patients who received the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens V4C model for myopic and myopic astigmatism correction.
Setting:
Eye Center Medipolis, Antwerp, Belgium
Methods:
Seventy-five eyes of 38 patients underwent implantation of a myopic or toric Implantable Collamer Lens (V4C model, STAAR Surgical Inc) for myopia and myopic astigmatism correction. The new design shows a central hole that allows a more natural aqueous flow eliminating the need to perform Nd:Yag iridotomy or peripheral iridectomy. All surgeries in this study were performed by one experienced surgeon (E.L.M.) using topical and intracameral anesthesia. ICL power calculation was performed using the software provided by the manufacturer. Mean spherical refraction was -5.97±2.82 diopters (D) (range: -0.75 to -14.75 D), and mean cylinder was -0.94±0.087 D (range: 0 to -4.25 D). Main outcomes measures evaluated before and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery included: uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), vault and intraocular pressure (IOP).
Results:
No complications occurred during the surgical procedures. At 1 year the mean efficacy and safety index were 1.06±0.11 and 1.07±0.11 respectively. The mean UCVA and BCVA were 20/20 or better in 97.3% and 98.6% of eyes respectively. 97.3% and 100% of eyes were within ±0.5D and ±1.0D of the expected correction. The mean spherical equivalent (D) 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery was 0.0±0.07, -0.02±0.06, -0.02±0.06 and 0.01±0.06 respectively. IOP values remained stable throughout the postoperative period. Mean vault was 505±230 microns 1 year after surgery. No eye needed explantation and decentration of the ICL optic was not observed, and no case of pupillary block was detected.
Conclusions:
The results of the present study support the good outcomes of the new Visian Implantable Collamer Lens V4C model for myopic and myopic astigmatism correction. This design, which avoids iridotomy or iridectomy, provides good IOP outcomes.
