Session Title: Phakic IOL Implantation I
Session Date/Time: Tuesday 08/10/2013 | 14:00-16:00
Paper Time: 14:06
Venue: Main Lecture Hall (Ground Floor)
First Author: : G.Van Rijn THE NETHERLANDS
Co Author(s): : H. Jongman J. Wijnen G. Luyten
Purpose:
To evaluate the safety of the Artisan iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) (Ophtec BV, Groningen, The Netherlands) for the correction of hyperopia in phakic eyes.
Setting:
Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands & Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Methods:
Retrospective study of 28 eyes of 14 patients with a follow-up up to 16 years after Artisan phakic IOL implantation for the correction of hyperopia.
Results:
Mean pre-operative spherical equivalent was +6 diopters with an average CDVA (corrected distance visual acuity) of 0.12 logMAR. Average follow-up time after implantation was 11 years. Mean CDVA at last follow-up was 0.12 logMAR. One eye showed a loss of more than 2 lines in CDVA. Mean annual endothelial cell loss was 0.9% (n=16), 1.5% (n=10), and 1.8% (n=8) at 5, 11, and 16 years follow-up.
Conclusions:
A stable mean CDVA was found after implantation of Artisan phakic IOL though 1 eye lost more than 2 lines of the CDVA. Rates of endothelial cell loss are higher than physiological cell loss of 0.6-0.9% per year.
