Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate safety, visual outcomes and complications of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Pedro Hispano Hospital, Matosinhos, Portugal

Methods:

Retrospective study of 44 eyes of 24 patients who underwent pIOL implantation between January 2011 and July 2012. Ten eyes received an Artisan IOL (group 1), 26 eyes received an Artiflex IOL (group 2), 7 eyes received an Artiflex toric (group 3). Manifest refraction, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), biomicroscopy, tonometry, fundoscopy, central endothelial cell count (ECC) and anterior segment morphometry were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) was also determined postoperatively.

Results:

Mean follow-up was 11 months. Mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) and that at last follow-up were, respectively, -10,14±1,53 and -0,23±0,91diopters (D) (group 1), -8,65±0,41 and -0,39±0,63 D (group 2), -10,18±1,87 and -0,36±0,11 D (group 3). Group 3 had a mean preoperative cylinder of -2,57±0,09 D, which decreased to -0,71±0,21 D postoperatively. The BSCVA improved 1 line or more in 33 eyes and 2 lines or more in 14 eyes. A slight ECC loss, -2.17% (group 1), -2.02% (group 2), -1,17% (group 3) occured at last follow-up. Main complications were pigmented precipitates with Artiflex lenses, intraocular hypertension, slight lenses descentration and 1 exchange due to uncorrected visual acuity refractive error.

Conclusions:

Similar to other studies we demonstrate that implantation of iris-claw PIOLs is a reversible, effective with significant decrease of spherical equivalent, stable and safe procedure.
