Purpose:
To report the 2-year results of patients implanted with a KAMRA corneal inlay (AcuFocus, Inc., USA) in combination with a simultaneous LASIK (CLK) for the treatment of ametropic presbyopia.
Setting:
Shinagawa LASIK Center, Tokyo, Japan.
Methods:
From August 2009 to February 2013, 3,304 ametropic presbyopic patients received a CLK procedure. In the non-dominant eye, a 200-micron flap was created using a femtosecond laser, an excimer laser ablation was performed to correct refractive error, and then the inlay was implanted. The fellow eye was corrected for distance with a traditional thin-flap LASIK procedure. Monocular uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (UDVA, UNVA) and patient questionnaire responses were evaluated at preoperatively and postoperatively out to 2 years.
Results:
Mean UDVA improved 8 lines from 20/125 to 20/20 between preoperative and at 2 year postoperative visits (P<.0001). Mean UNVA improved 3 lines from J6 preoperatively to J2 at 2 years postoperatively. (P<.0001). Patients reported high satisfaction with their result with reduced dependence on reading glasses.
Conclusions:
Two-year outcomes of combining LASIK surgery with inlay implantation for the treatment of ametropic presbyopes demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for improving uncorrected distance and near visual acuity and results in high patient satisfaction and reduced dependence on reading glasses.
