Purpose:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a small aperture corneal inlay for the treatment of presbyopia.
Setting:
24 sites (US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific)
Methods:
Prospective, non-randomized clinical trial of 507 naturally occurring emmetropic presbyopes treated with a small aperture corneal inlay. Patients were between the ages of 45 and 60. Additional inclusion criteria were uncorrected near visual acuity of worse than 20/40 and better than 20/100 and a best-corrected distance VA ? 20/20 in both eyes, with a spherical equivalent between +0.50 to -0.75.
Results:
Mean near acuity improved from J8 at pre-op to J2 at 3 years post-op, a gain of 3.4 lines. At pre-op, mean uncorrected intermediate distance acuity was 20/32, which improved 1.1 lines to 20/25 at 3 years post-op. Between pre-op and 3 years post-op, both monocular and binocular mean uncorrected distance visual acuity remained unchanged at 20/20 and 20/16, respectively.
Conclusions:
For emmetropic presbyopes, implantation of a small aperture inlay improves both near and intermediate visual acuity while retaining good distance vision. Results are maintained over the 3 year follow-up.
