Purpose:
To report the 3-year postoperative safety and efficacy outcomes after monocular Kamra Corneal Inlay (ACI7000PDT) implantation in corneal pockets of emmetropic presbyopes to improve near and intermediate vision.
Setting:
Prospective, interventional case series
Methods:
Twenty-four naturally emmetropic presbyopes between 45 and 60 years of age were scheduled for corneal inlay implantation in the non-dominant eye in an university outpatient surgery center. Patients were eligible, if their uncorrected distance visual acuity was at least 20/20 in both eyes without any additional ocular pathology. Visual acuities for distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) were assessed with the Optec 6500 Vision Tester. Other examinations included visual field exams, endothelial cell count (ECC) and central corneal thickness (CCT) measurement on the implanted eye. Minimum postoperative follow-up was 36 months.
Results:
After 36 months, mean UDVA was 20/20 (95%CI 20/20) on the implanted eye and 20/16 (95%CI 20/16) binocularly. Mean binocular UNVA improved from 20/50 to 20/25 (CI95% 20/25-20/20), 71 % (17/24) read ?20/25 after 36 months. Mean binocular UIVA was 20/20 (17/24 ? 20/20; 95%CI 20/20). No patient had any detectable central visual field defect, no inlay was explanted nor inflammatory reactions were observed. ECC and CCT remained stable within the follow-up.
Conclusions:
The Kamra Corneal Inlay, implanted in femtosecond laser created pockets, seems to provide an effective and safe treatment for the correction of emmetropic presbyopes after 36 months.
