Purpose:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of CXL followed by refractive lens exchange (Toric IOL) in patients with Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMCD)
Setting:
Retrospective case series of patients with PMCD who underwent CXL and toric IOL at Centre for Sight New Delhi
Methods:
CXL was performed with the epithelium off method. Toric IOL was performed 6 months or later post CXL once the refraction and topography were stable. UCVA, BCVA, Refraction, Topography (Pentacam) was recorded pre-op and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-op.
Results:
5 eyes of 5 patients with mild to moderate PMCD underwent CXL followed by Toric IOL. Mean age of patients was 57+/- 5.6 years. Mean follow up was 12+/- 3.4 months. Mean Sim K pre-op was 47.06 +/- 3.22 which reduced to 45.76 +/- 2.74 at last follow up. Mean pre-op Kmax was 57.44+/-5.91 which reduced to 54.52+/- 6.61. Mean pre-op sphere and cyl were -5.5 +/- 6.61 and 4.0+/-1.5, which reduced to -0.8+/-0.53 and 1.6+/-0.66 respectively. Mean UCVA pre-op was 1.12 +/-0.15 logMAR which improved to 0.4+/-0.15 logMAR. No complications were noted in our series.
Conclusions:
CXL followed by Toric IOL is an option for stabilizing the progression and optically rehabilitating the patients with mild to moderate PMCD.
