Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the quality of the optical system of the accommodating IOL model with changable shape of the refractive surface.

Setting:

Eye microsurgery center, Kiev.

Methods:

The IOL model consisted of a chamber filled with silicon oil. One of the refractive surfaces had a stable shape, the other one was made of thin transparent mambrane, that had an ability to alter its shape under the oil pressure in the chamber. Three degrees of the IOL optical power were reached: 21.0 D, 23.0 D and 32.0 D. The lens was placed in the adaquate model of the human eye system, and the quality of the IOL optical system was measured with TRACEY VFA in terms of the Root Mean Square (RMS).

Results:

Rising of the optical power form 21.0 D to 23.0 D and 32.0 D resulted in the increase of the higher order aberrations (HOA) from 0.223 to 0.229 and 0.409 micrometers and the lower optical aberrations (LOA) from 0.668 to 1.75 and2.134 micrometers. The registered levels of the optical aberration corresponded to the physiological parameters of a normal eye.

Conclusions:

Altering of the optical power of the accommodating IOL is characterized with optical aberrations which can secure normal level of visual acuity.
