Purpose:
To compare bilateral symmetry between OD (right eye) and OS (left eye) eyes, intercorneal differences and Functional Optical Zone (FOZ) of the corneal aberrations among normal subjects.
Setting:
Aurelios Augenzentrum, Recklinghausen, Germany.
Methods:
A total of 106 subjects were bilaterally evaluated. In all cases standard examinations, and corneal wavefront topography (OPTIKON Scout, Milano) were performed. The OD/OS bilateral symmetry was evaluated in terms of corneal wavefront aberration. FOZ-values were evaluated from the Root-Mean-Square (RMS) of the High-Order Wavefront-Aberration (HOWAb). Correlations of FOZ, defocus, astigmatism power and axis, and cardinal and oblique astigmatism for binocular vs. monocular, and binocular vs. intercorneal differences were analysed
Results:
Mean FOZ was 5.90±1.44mm monocularly, 6.27±1.60mm binocularly, and 6.83±1.87mm intercorneal difference. FOZ binocular was larger than monocular, and smaller than intercorneal difference, but both strongly positively correlated; defocus binocular was not different and strongly positively correlated to monocular, but larger than and not correlated to intercorneal difference; astigmatism power was smaller than monocular, but not different than intercorneal difference, but both strongly positively correlated; cardinal astigmatism was not different than monocular, but larger than intercorneal difference, and both strongly positively correlated; and oblique astigmatism was not different than monocular or intercorneal difference, but strongly positively correlated to intercorneal difference.
Conclusions:
OD-vs.-OS bilateral symmetry (which influences binocular summation) of the HOWAb, FOZ, defocus, astigmatism power and axis, and cardinal and oblique astigmatism has been confirmed. Monocular FOZ was smaller than Binocular FOZ and both smaller than Intercorneal FOZ. The diameter of glare free vision is larger in binocular than monocular conditions.
