Purpose:
To assess our cataract surgery results in eyes with previous corneal refractive procedures, using the available formulae to calculate the intraocular lens (IOL) power.
Setting:
Ophthalmos Research and Therapeutic Institute, Athens, Greece.
Methods:
29 eyes with previous corneal refractive procedures were included (20 eyes with LASIK, 6 with PRK 2 with Radial Keratotomy (RK) 1 with RK and LASIK. IOL power calculation was done using available formulae (Holladay II, SRK T, Hoffer Q) in combination with historical and non historical methods and the on line calculation tool (ASCRS calculator).
Results:
Mean spherical equivalent (SE) deviation from target refraction was 1,077D
Mean sphere (SPH) deviation from target refraction was1,30D. 80% of the eyes were within +/-1D from target.
When the ASCRS calculator tool was used to recalculate IOL power mean SPH deviation from refractive target was 0,82D. Eyes with previous RK needed the longest time to reach final refraction.
Conclusions:
We do believe that use of on line calculation tools is an easy and accurate way to IOL power prediction post refractive surgery.Nevertheless refractive surprises are to be expected and preoperative counseling of patients should include the possibility of a second procedure in order to correct residual refractive error.
