Purpose:
To show that cataract removal can increase the ACV & ACD and it is more significant when ACV & ACD are already low.
Setting:
Prospective study of 80 eyes in the span of 4 months at Sun Eye Hospital , Lucknow , India. Pentacam HR was used to measure ACV and ACD in pre and post operatively .
Methods:
4 groups have been created depending on preoperative ACV. Only normal uneventful Phacoemulsification with in the bag IOL eyes were selected. Mean age was 57 years.45 males and 35 females .
Results:
The analysis of variance revealed that the average percent change in chamber volume from pre to post was significant (p<0.0001) different among the groups. The post-hoc test showed that the percent increase in chamber volume was significantly (p<0.0001) higher in Group 1 (39.3%), Group 2 (13%), Group 3 (8.7%) than 4 (0.2%). The percent increase was also significantly (p=0.005) higher in Group 2 than Group 4. The analysis of variance revealed that the average percent change in ACD from pre to post was significant (p<0.0001) different among the groups. The post-hoc test showed that the percent increase was significantly higher in Group 1 (60.6%, p<0.0001), Group 2 (64.3%, p<0.0001), Group 3 (54.3%, p=0.002) than 4 (16.3%)
Conclusions:
This study proves that cataract removal alone can be useful to increase the ACV & ACD especially with low ACV & ACD preoperatively .This fact establishes that early Cataract removal can be a tool to cure narrow angle glaucoma.
