Purpose:
To compare the accuracy of the Haigis, Hoffer Q and SRK/T formulae in the calculation of the intraocular lens (IOL) power for clear lens extraction in eyes with high hyperopia.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology - Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova de Gaia /Espinho - Portugal
Methods:
28 eyes with an axial length (AL) inferior to 22mm submited to Facoemulsifiation with implantation of IOL in the bag.
Retrospective analisis of AL and keratometric indexes calculated with IOL Master. The predicted refractive error of each formula was obtained for the power of the implanted IOL. The accuracy of the formulae was analyzed by comparing the difference between the predicted refractive error of each formula and actual postoperative refractive error.
Results:
The prediction error (PE = formula-predicted refraction postoperative refractive error) was 0.13D for the Haigis formula, 0.25D for the Hoffer Q formula and -0.37D for the SRK/T formula. The mean absolute error (MAE) was 0.53D for the Haigis formula, 0.54D for the Hoffer Q formula and 0.55D for the SRK/T formula.
Conclusions:
The three formulas performed well, with a MAE inferior to 1.00D. The Haigis and Hoffer Q formulas showed a slight tendency for miopic while the SRK/T formula showed a tendency for hipermetropic residual refractive errors.
