Abstract Details

Purpose:

Comparison of accommodation amplitude and visual acuity of the Akkolens Lumina with a monofocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

Vissum Corporacion Oftalmologica, Alicante, Spain and the Resbiomed-Vissum Sofia Eye Clinic, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized clinical study of the first 16 eyes of 16 different patients of a larger trial, with all eyes suffering from cataract. Eyes were divided, at random, in group 1, with 11 eyes of 11 patients to be implanted with the Akkolens Lumina, and group 2, with 5 eyes of 5 patients, to be implanted with the Acrysof SN60AT. After implantation the visual acuity, residual refractive error and defocus responses were measured.

Results:

The corrected distance visual acuity was not statistically significantly different between the two groups (p=0.72), meaning that the Lumina and the Acrysof performed the same. However, the defocus response of group 1 was significantly better (p<0.01), with a mean visual acuity of 0.64±0.22 (decimal scale) for a defocus stimulus of -3D (equivalent to a reading distance of 33cm) compared to group 2. The defocus response for a defocus stimulus of 1.5D (equivalent to 66cm) was not significantly different between the groups (p=0.07), but here group 1 showed a mean visual acuity of 0.81 compared to 0.67 for group 2. The defocus curve was significantly better in group 1 (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

The preliminary results show that the Akkolens Lumina successfully restores visual acuity for far and for near and also provides sufficient accommodation to allow sharp vision up to a reading distance of 33cm.
