Purpose:
To compare the amount of spherical aberration and contrast sensitivity in eyes implanted with a new extended depth of focus IOL to eyes implanted with a conventional aspheric IOL.
Setting:
Clinical trial, tertiary teaching hospital - Perth, Western Australia.
Methods:
An intraocular lens with +ve S.A. was implanted in 59 eyes of 42 patients in a prospective clinical trial. The amount of spherical aberration was measured with a ray tracing device and compared to a control group of eyes implanted with a conventional aspheric IOL incorporating negative spherical aberration.
The photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity was analyzed in both groups.
Results:
The amount of spherical aberration with an average pupil size of 3.5 mm was +0.08 for those patients with a positive aspheric IOL. There was no clinical or statistical difference in the photopic or mesopic contrast sensitivity between the positive aspheric and negative aspheric IOLs in the two groups of patients.
Conclusions:
The amount of spherical aberration measured in the trial is considered desirable for high quality vision and was not associated with loss of contrast sensitivity in this study.
