Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine the posterior edge profile of a new hydrophilic IOL designed for sub 2mm incision insertion

Setting:

St Thomas" Hospital, London

Methods:

Hydrophilic IOLs are generally thought to have worse PCO performance in comparison to hydrophobic IOLs. There is some evidence that this is due to poorer posterior edge characteristics. The B and L Incise is a new hydrophilic IOL with a 22% water content designed to have enhanced PCO prevention performance. The edge profile of the IOL was imaged using environmental scanning electron microscopy which does not distort water containing materials. Edge profile at the optic edge and optic haptic junction was measured using image analysis to measure the local radius of curvature at the posterior edge, an index of edge sharpness

Results:

This IOL has an extremely sharp high quality edge profile with a local radius of curvature of 3 microns and a 360 barrier which is better than that of most hydrophobic IOLs

Conclusions:

This is a really high quality edge whch would be expected to confer excellent PCO prevention. Clinical studies are required now to confirm this and will resolve the question of whether IOL material is of importance in PCO prevention
