Purpose:
To examine visual outcomes following bilateral implantation of a new double C-loop trifocal IOL (PODF/FineVision,PhysIOL, Ličge, Belgium).
Setting:
St Godfriedstraat 8 Sint Truiden, Belgium
Methods:
10 eyes undergoing routine cataract surgery were implanted bilaterally with the PODF/Finevision trifocal IOL and followed up post-operatively at 3 months. The PODF/Finevision optic features a combination of 2 diffractive structures, resulting in distance, intermediate (+1.75 D add) and near vision (+3.50 D add) zones. Apodization of the optic surface increases far vision dominance with pupil aperture. Data collected at the 3-month visit included uncorrected and corrected distance, intermediate and near vision; subjective refraction, defocus curve in photopic conditions, contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000); halometry glare testing with ACV.
Results:
Mean post-operative CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA showed good agreement with the defocus curve data, demonstrating an extensive range of sharp vision. Contrast sensitivity was similar to the one with the FineVision and was in the range of bifocal IOLs. Glare was also acceptable and in the range of the age group.
Conclusions:
The PODF IOL can reduce spectacle dependence especially in the intermediate range. Side effects of diffractive multifocal IOL as glare and decrease of contrast sensitivity seems to be similar with trifocality.
