Purpose:
To assess the visual performance and rate of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in eyes after phacoemulsification with implantation of a trifocal lens (AT LISAtri 839MP) in a follow-up period of 12 months
Setting:
Premium Clinic Teplice / Department of Ophthalmology, Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic
Methods:
50 eyes of 25 patients were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification with AT LISAtri 839MP lens implantation. The study protocol included preoperative and postoperative measurement of uncorrected and corrected distance (UDVA/CDVA, 4 m), intermediate (UIVA/CIVA, 66 cm) and near (UNVA/CNVA, 33 cm) as well as postoperative measurement of photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity (CS). Near and intermediate visual acuities were also measured postoperatively at 40 and 80 cm, respectively. Additionally, PCO was assessed by means of the EPCO 2000 system on a scale from 0 to 4.
Results:
UDVA improved significantly (p<0.01) at 12 months after surgery whereas the CDVA remained unchanged (p=0.43). UNVA also improved significantly from a mean preoperative LogMAR value of 0.92±0.28 to a mean postoperative value of 0.27±0.16 (p<0.01). Likewise, a significant improvement was also observed in LogMAR CNVA (p=0.01). No statistically significant differences were found between UNVA (p=0.16) measured at 33 cm and 40 cm, as well as between UIVA (p=0.49) measured at 66 cm and 80cm. Statistically significant differences were found between photopic and mesopic CS for all spatial frequencies evaluated (p<0.01). The main EPCO score for the central 4.3-mm zone was 0.26±0.35. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rate was 2%.
Conclusions:
The trifocal lens AT LISAtri 839MP provides an excellent visual outcome from near (33 cm) to distance (4 m), and therefore a wide range of focus, maintaining good levels of photopic and mesopic CS. The 12-month low rate of PCO with this new lens contributes to this excellent visual performance.
