Purpose:
To evaluate refractive outcomes and spectacle independence following bilateral implantation of multifocal IOL vs monofocal IOL
Setting:
Fundación Oftalmológica del Mediterrįneo (Valencia)
Methods:
Patients undergoing cataract surgery were randomized to receiving either AcrySof IQ or ReSTOR IOL. Refractive outcomes were measured at 6 months postop. Refractive predictability, patient reported spectacle independence, and cost was compared between the two IOL groups
Results:
At 6 months postop, 77.7% and 75.4% of monofocal (n=98) and multifocal (n=108) achieved MRSE of ± 0.50D. 91% or more patients achieved postop MRSE of ±1D in both groups. Significantly greater number of patients reported completed spectacle independence with multifocal vs monofocal IOL (78.3% vs 25.3%, p <0.001). Average cost of correction lenses alone was higher for the monofocal IOL (Euro 267.21) compared to multifocal IOL (Euro 154.52).
Conclusions:
Six months post-implantation of multifocal vs monofocal IOLs showed good refractive predictability with both IQ and ReSTOR IOLs. Significantly greater patients achieved spectacle freedom and had lower spectacle cost with ReSTOR multifocal IOL compared to IQ monofocal IOL.
