Abstract Details

Purpose:

To measure visual outcomes following bilateral implantation of multifocal IOL vs monofocal IOL

Setting:

Multicenter prospective study.

Methods:

206 patients were randomized to receiving either an AcrySof monofocal (IQ) or multifocal (ReSTOR) IOL following cataract extraction across 24 sites in Europe. Uncorrected (UCVA) and best-corrected (BSCVA) logMAR visual acuity was measured (using ETDRS chart) pre- and 6 months postoperatively at distance and near (40cm). UCVA was also measured at intermediate distance (60 cm) pre- and 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

At six-month control, more patients with multifocal vs monofocal IOLs achieved UCVAof 0.1 logMAR or better (45.7% vs. 2.1%, p<0.0001) at all distances. No significant difference in preoperative and 6mos distance UCVA and BSCVA was observed between the groups. Postoperatively, UCVA was significantly better with multifocal than monofocal IOL at near (0.13 ± 0.14 vs 0.43 ± 0.19 logMAR, p<0.001) and intermediate (0.15±0.16 vs 0.25 ± 0.16 logMAR, p<0.01).

Conclusions:

At six months post-implantation of multifocal vs monofocal IOLs patients with multifocal IOLs had significantly better visual acuity at intermediate and near distance.
