Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare patient reported visual quality of life with the NEI-RQL 42 questionnaire between bilateral monofocal versus bilateral multifocal IOL implantation.

Setting:

Patients scheduled for cataract surgery were randomized to receiving either bilateral monofocal AcrySof IQ or multifocal ReSTOR IOL across 24 sites in Europe.

Methods:

Patients rated their quality of life and vision on the self-administered NEI-RQL 42 questionnaire which included questions on dependence on optical correction, satisfaction with correction, clarity of vision, postoperative expectation, glare, worry, and suboptimal optical correction.

Results:

After 6 months, 188 patients (90 with IQ and 98 with ReSTOR) rated their visual quality of life on the questionnaire. The overall satisfaction with their visual situation was reported higher in comparison to the preoperative state. In the ReSTOR group, patients reported significantly less dependence on optical correction (p<.0001) and greater fulfillment of their preoperative expectations from cataract surgery (p=.004) compared to the AcrySof IQ group. No significant difference was observed between the two groups for the items on visual clarity, distance vision, worry, and suboptimal visual correction. Glare was systematically reported higher among the ReSTOR patients than IQ patients (p=0.015).

Conclusions:

Patients experienced good visual outcomes and satisfaction postoperatively based on the ratings on the questionnaire. Patients who received AcrySof ReSTOR reported significantly less dependence on optical correction (p<.0001).
