Session Title: Multifocal Technology and Comparative studies
Session Date/Time: Tuesday 08/10/2013 | 08:00-10:30
Paper Time: 08:54

Purpose:
To compare visual outcomes and patient satisfaction following the implant of the trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) Finevision (Physiol) and AT LISA tri (Zeiss).
Setting:
Instituto de Oftalmologķa Avanzada. Madrid
Methods:
One month after the implant of 25 IOLs of each of the two models, defocus curves were obtained from -5.00 to +3.00 D in 0.50 D steps. For each implanted IOL, we also determined OSI (Objective Scattering Index), MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) and the Strehl ratio using the Visiometrics OQAS (Optical Quality Analysis System). Each patient also completed a questionnaire to assess how satisfied they were with their near, intermediate and distance vision, adapting to light changes, night vision, possible halos and overall visual outcome. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon and all postoperative tests by the same clinician.
Results:
Defocus curves were similar for the two trifocals. However, best behavior was observed for the FineVision lens at near distance while the AT LISA tri showed better performance at intermediate distance.
The following mean indices were recorded for the FineVision IOL versus the AT LISA tri respectively: OSI 2.13 ± 0.40 vs. 2.26 ± 0.72; MTF 30.06 ± 5.50 vs. 27.97 ± 6.68; and Strehl ratio 0.186 ± 0.03 vs. 0.148 ± 0.06.
Higher scores were obtained in the questionnaire for the FineVison lens regarding near vision, distance vision and halos, while the AT LISA tri received more points when patients were asked about intermediate vision or their response to light changes. All items were awarded 4 points or more on a scale of 1 to 5 regardless of the IOL received.
Conclusions:
Both the objective tests performed and self-reported patient satisfaction indicate excellent lens performance and visual outcomes for both the FineVision and AT LISA tri multifocal IOLs.
