Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcome of intrascleral haptic fixation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) with fibrin glue in children with aphakia and without adequate capsular support.

Setting:

Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Methods:

Twenty three eyes of 15 children who underwent glued intrascleral haptic fixation of posterior chamber IOL were retrospectively analyzed. The outcome measures included visual outcome, IOL centration, endothelial changes, and presence of any introperative and postoperative complications.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 7.35±2.41 years. Ten (66.6%) patients were male and 5 (33.3%) were female. The mean follow-up period was 13.5±6.5 months. The mean preoperative BCVA was 0.40±0.36 logMAR which improved to 0.18±0.12 logMAR postoperatively at 6 weeks (P<0.001). The mean preoperative and 6 weeks postoperative endothelial cell density was 2786±326.6 cells/mm2 and 2658±296.4 cells/mm2 respectively (P=0.23). No evidence of retinal detachment, IOL dislocation, endophthalmitis, or glaucoma was noted in any eye in the follow up period.

Conclusions:

Fibrin glue-assisted intrascleral haptic fixation of a PC IOL is a safe and effective method to manage aphakia with inadequate capsular support in children.
