Purpose:
To study the different patterns of VEP and ERG in cases having congenital cataract and congenital corneal opacities and elicit their changes after surgical interference
Setting:
Ophthalmic pediatric unit, Aboulreesh Hospital, Faculty of Medicine,Cairo University
Methods:
20 pediatric cases presenting with unilateral or bilateral congenital cataract and congenital corneal opacities were included in the study. Electrodiagnostic tests were performed for each case in photopic and scotopic conditions using Flash VEP or reversed Pattern VEP according to the age of the patient and ERG. The tests were repeated after cataract extraction with or without intraocular lens implantation and keratoplasty for corneal opacities. The changes in the amplitude, latency and responses to different check sizes were recorded.
Results:
Dense congenital unilateral cataracts were noticed to affect the amplitude of flash VEP more than the latency and more than bilateral cases. Congenital corneal opacities were associated with similar findings but with more profound effects in cases associated with anterior segment dysgenesis especially on ERG.
Conclusions:
Congenital cataract and corneal opacities may compromise visual development through visual deprivation and deficient interocular competition manifested by electro-diagnostic tests changes, whereas dense congenital bilateral diseases compromise visual development primarily through visual deprivation alone which may be manifested by less profound effects
