Purpose:
To evaluate the outcomes of cataract extraction in eyes with cataract and congenital cloboma.
Setting:
Matini Hospital of Kashan, Amirkabir Ave. Kashan, Iran
Methods:
Retrospective study carried out in 33 eyes of 24 consecutive patients between April 2001 through March 2011, who had cataract and congenital coloboma. All patients underwent cataract extraction with or without intraocular lens (IOL) implantalation in Matini Hospital of kashan(Iran).
Results:
Mean age of the 23 patients (33 eyes) was 48.2 years and female to male ratio was 1.4 visual acuity improved in 27(81.2%) of eyes, no change in 4(12.1%)and in 2(6.0%) eyes decreased to no light perception(NLP). In 2 eyes nucleus dropped into vitreous and vitreous loss occurred in 8(24.2%) eyes.
Conclusions:
Improvement of vision indicates that cataract surgery is beneficial in patients with typical congenital coloboma.
