Purpose:
To evaluate headache characteristics and pupil reactivity recovery time according to drugs and their amount
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Haeundae Paik Hospital, Inje University, College of Medicine
Methods:
140 eyes of 120 patients scheduled for cataract surgery were randomly assigned into seven groups : (1) Carbachol (0.1 cc) infusion (2) Carbachol (0.5 cc) infusion (3) Carbachol (1.0 cc) infusion (4) Acetylcholinel (0.1 cc) infusion (5) Acetylcholine (0.5 cc) infusion (6) Acetylcholine (1.0 cc) infusion (7) Balanced salt solution(BSS) infusion (control). We compared the preoperative intraocular pressure(IOP), postoperative IOP, headache characteristics, and pupil reactivity.
Results:
There was no significant difference in IOP between the groups. Incidence of headache was lower in acetylcholine infusion. And recovery of pupil reactivity was faster in acetylcholine, too.
Conclusions:
There were less systemic and ocular complications using acetylcholine than carbachol.
