Abstract Details

Purpose:

To build a statistical framework for formally determining postoperative drivers of patient satisfaction with a corneal method for presbyopia correction

Setting:

Multicenter, prospective, interventional case series from two private clinics in Mexico

Methods:

Hydrogel inlays were implanted in non-dominant eyes of emmetropes, on the corneal stromal bed, beneath a keratotomy flap in a series of studies. The implant is designed to change the curvature of the overlying cornea, with a subsequent increase in refractive power. The OptecĀ® 6500 Vision Tester recorded uncorrected visual acuity at near and distance in the treated eye. Patient self-evaluation monitored visual task ability, the incidence of visual symptoms, and the levels of patient satisfaction. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the strongest drivers of post-operative satisfaction.

Results:

The strongest postoperative drivers of patient satisfaction at near are uncorrected near visual acuity (strongly correlated with visual task ability) and the incidence of visual symptoms. A strong postoperative driver of patient satisfaction at distance (not strongly correlated with visual task ability due to the fellow eye) is the intensity of visual symptoms, while uncorrected distance visual acuity in the treated eye is not a significant driver. For overall satisfaction, the most significant drivers are UCNVA and the incidence of visual symptoms in the treated eye, while UCDVA in the treated eye is not statistically or clinically meaningful.

Conclusions:

Emmetropic presbyopes need to achieve substantial near visual acuity to be satisfied with multifocal vision correction, but equally as important induced visual symptoms should be minimized.
