Abstract Details

Purpose:

Comparison of intra-operatively optical measurement of corneal flap thickness using the Wavelight Refractive Suite and measurement of corneal flap thickness post-operatively with Optical Coherence Tomography.

Setting:

Ooginstituut, Aalst, Belgium

Methods:

During All-Laser LASIK, a corneal flap was cut using the Wavelight FS200 femtosecond laser. Flap thickness of 120µ was attempted. After lifting the flap, the corneal flap thickness was measured with optical pachymeter device on the Waveligth EX 500 excimerlaser. Ninety three eyes of 53 patients were examined. One day post-operatively, anterior segment Optical Coherence tomography OCT (Optovue) was used to measure the flap thickness.

Results:

Normal probability plots give evidence of a random test with normal distribution. Mean flap thickness measured intra-operatively with Optical pachymetry was 124µ (standard deviation SD 10µ), with 99% confidence of mean flap thickness between 121µ and 127µ. Mean flap thickness measured post-operatively with OCT was 112µ (SD 9µ), with 99% confidence of mean flap thickness between 110µ and 114µ. Difference between OCT and Optical pachymetry flap thickness was 11µ (SD 10µ) with 90% confidence of thickness difference between 10µ-13µ. OCT measured stastistically significant thinner flaps than optical pachymetry (p=0.6242).

Conclusions:

Mean flap thickness measured intra-operatively with Optical pachymetry was thicker than attempted flap thickness of 120µ. One day post-operatively mean OCT measurement of flap thickness was thinner than attempted thickness of 120µ. Intra-operatively Optical pachymetry overestimated flap thickness as measured with OCT one day post-operative.
