Purpose:
To evaluate safety, efficacy and ease of measurement of epithelial thickness and to investigate to investigate patterns and descriptive statistics of epithelium distribution, in a keratoconic patient based on anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS OCT). To investigate patterns and descriptive statistics of epithelium distribution
Setting:
Laservision.gr Eye Institute, Athens, Greece
Methods:
Two hundred fifty two cases diagnosed with keratoconus (group A), were subjected to series of AS OCT corneal epithelial imaging, in comparison to an age-matched cases, of non-keratoconic population (group B). We investigated epithelial thickness and epithelial topographic thickness distribution
Results:
Mean epithelial thickness was 55.65 ± 1.22 for group A, and 51.97 ± 0.70 for group B. Topographic epithelial thickness variability for group A was 9.80 ± 0.41 ?m, and for group B, 1.53 ± 0.21 ?m.
Conclusions:
Anterior-segment OCT epithelial imaging also supports our previous findings with high frequency ultrasound measurements, of the increase, of overall epithelial thickness in keratoconic eyes, in comparison to normal. AS-OCT further offers ease of use and possibly higher predictability of measurement, which may be significant advantage.
