Purpose:
To evaluate phacoparameters of patients with small pupil due to the pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) who underwent phacoemulsification surgery.
Setting:
Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital, Ankara, TURKEY
Methods:
A total of 92 patients underwent phaco surgery in same technique with same micro pulse technology were evaluated. Group 1 was consisted of 45 patients with small pupil secondary to PEX and Group 2 was consisted of 47 patients as a control subjects. Clinical findings and phacoparameters such as total phaco time (TPT), effective phaco time (EPT) and average phaco power percentage (APP), intraoperative and postoperative complications were compared between two groups. Descriptive statistics were generated for demographics, TPT, EPT and APP. Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, Two-Independent Samples tests and Independent-Samples t tests were used for statistical analysis.
Results:
The mean ages of patients in Group 1 and Group 2 were 73.2±7.1 and 65.1±8.7 years, respectively. The mean age of patients was statistically significantly higher in eyes with PEX (p<0.001). No one had intraoperative complication such as posterior capsule rupture or iris trauma. The mean TPT, EPT and APP were respectively 108.2 ± 55.7 sec, 17.5 ±10.5 sec, 16.5±11.1 in Group 1 and 85.5±60.4 sec, 16.2±16.4 sec, 16.0±5.0 in Group 2. The mean TPT, EPT and APP were all higher in group 1. The mean TPT was statistically significantly higher in eyes with PEX (p=0.03), but the mean EPT and APP differences were not statistically significant between groups (p=0.80 and p=0.20, respectively). Postoperative corneal edema or anterior chamber inflammation which persisted more than a week was not observed in any patient.
Conclusions:
Although patients with small pupil due to PEX had higher phacoparameters than control subjects, no one had any intraoperative or postoperative complication. Therefore phaco surgery with micro pulse technology is safe and effective methods even for eye had high risk of complication due to small pupil with PEX.
