Purpose:
Comparison of a new double cross-action forceps in microincision cataract surgery with standard forceps.
Setting:
International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany
Methods:
In a clinical prospective, randomised study, 28 cataract eyes with a median age of 74.96 years were enrolled and devided into 4 groups: group 1 = 0.9 mm incision, group 2 = 1.8 mm incision, group 3 = 2.2 mm incision using the newly developed microincision forceps. The data was compared to the control group 4 eyes with a 2.2 mm incision using standard utrata forceps. Incision size was measured using a caliper intraoperativly and capsulorhexis shape was evaluated by analyzing surgical videos.
Results:
Incision size could be reduced to 0.9 mm to perform a similar capsulorhexis than with the usual standard forceps. Especially in difficult cases like small corneal diameters, in children, or for astigmatism neutral refractive lens exchange, the double cross-action forceps benefits the surgeon.
Conclusions:
Microincision surgery is becoming more popular. For cases where the surgery should be performed without inducement of astigmatism, or in complicated cases where the surgical space is limited, the double cross-action forceps is a good alternative to the commonly used surgical instruments.
