Purpose:
To evaluate reading speed, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction of the Tecnis 1-piece ZMB00 aspheric diffractive intraocular lens (IOL)
Setting:
5 study sites across Europe (Augen-Zentrum-Nordwest, Ahaus (GER), Life and Health Sciences, Aston University, Birmingham (UK), Hospital Universitario Quirón, Madrid (SP), Goes Eye Center, Antwerp (Belgium), Midland Eye Institute, Solihull (UK)
Methods:
In this multinational multicentered prospective study, 52 cataract patients underwent bilateral implantation with the hydrophobic acrylic aspheric diffractive multifocal IOL after completing a questionnaire regarding their optical visual symptoms, use of visual correction and their visual satisfaction. The questionnaire was completed again 4-6 months after surgery along with measures of reading ability and spectacle independence.
Results:
The average reading speed was 121.4±30.8 words-per-minute. Words in text form could be read as small as -0.04 ± 0.18 logMAR. Spectacle independence was 100% for distance and 88% for near, with high levels of satisfaction reported. Overall rating of vision without glasses was 8.5 ± 1.1 out of 10 after surgery, compared to 4.7 ± 2.1 before surgery. This rating of vision without glasses (r=0.760) could be explained by pre-operative best-corrected distance acuity, post-operative reading acuity and post-operative uncorrected distance acuity in photopic conditions (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
In conclusion, the diffractive multifocal acrylic Tecnis® 1-Piece ZMB00 IOL gave a high level of spectacle independence, a good reading acuity and speed along with a wide near vision range, resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction.
