Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate patient outcomes and satisfaction, as well as surgeon experience, following bilateral implantation of the TECNIS Multifocal 1-Piece IOL (ZMB00).

Setting:

Multicenter study from 26 sites participating in the U.S. TECNIS Multifocal 1-Piece Evaluation Registry.

Methods:

Prospective, open-label, observational trial from surgeons implanting bilateral TECNIS Multifocal 1-Piece IOLs in qualified patients. All patients were 21 years or older with bilateral cataracts for which posterior multifocal IOL implantation had been planned for both eyes. All eyes had preoperative corneal astigmatism of < 1.0 D. Visual acuities (distance, intermediate, near) and patient satisfaction questionnaires were collected at the 3-4 month postoperative visit.

Results:

Final data were collected on 164 patients enrolled at 26 sites with a mean age of 66.5 ± 7.7 years. Mean postoperative sphere was -0.15 ± 0.47 D with 0.40 ± 0.39 D of cylinder and a spherical equivalent of +0.04 ± 0.46 D. Mean binocular UCVA was 20/23 at distance, 20/32 at intermediate and 20/23 at near. Mean binocular DCVA was 20/20 at distance, 20/30 at intermediate, and 20/21 at near. The percentage of patients with UCVAs of 20/32 or better was 91.8% for far, 67.7% for intermediate and 93.8% for near. At 3-4 months postoperative, 71.8% of patients never used glasses, 89.1% of patients were either satisfied or very satisfied with their overall vision without glasses, and 95.2% of surgeons would recommend the TECNIS Multifocal 1-piece IOL to family, friends, and colleagues.

Conclusions:

Final study results showed that patients implanted with the TECNIS Multifocal 1-Piece IOL reported high levels of satisfaction, had good visual outcomes at all distances, and minimal postoperative refractive error. This trial provides "real world" data to further corroborate published results.
