Purpose:
To evaluate visual outcomes changes in patients with binocular Tecnis ZMB00 (Abbott) multifocal intraocular lens implantations
Setting:
Clinic of Ophthalmology, Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin, Poland
Methods:
Three and 6 months after bilateral cataract surgery, 40 eyes of 20 patients were evaluated for binocular uncorrected distance and near visual acuity (UDVA,UNVA) and binokular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), as well as spectacle independence, uncorrected binocular photopic and mesopic distance and photopic near contrast sensitvities (CS-CSV-1000, F.A.C.T.); stereoscopic vision (Lang Stereotest II), subjective symptoms, patients satisfaction (VF-14) and complications.
Results:
Six months after surgery no significant improvement of binocular UDVA mean was achieved in comparison to three months follow-up ( -0.10 ± 0.13 versus -0.11 ± 0.14, p=NS). Significant improvement of binocular UNVA and UIVA means were detected (UNVA; -0.02 ± 0.12 versus 0.06 ± 0.12, UIVA; 0.07±0.11 versus 0.12 ± 0.15, p= 0.004). Three and six months postoperatively 85% of patients were totally spectacle independent. Contrast sensitivity under different conditions was within normal age-matched limits at both follow-up times and for some spatial frequences six months post-op were significantly better in comparison to three months follow-up (p<0.04).Stereoscopic vision was normal in all patients. Low degree of halo was noticed in 75% of patients. No glare was detected. Overall patients satisfaction was high and equaled 9.39 (3 months) and 9.19 (6 months) respectively. There were no postoperative complications.
Conclusions:
Cataract surgery with implantation of diffractive ZMB00 lenses in selected group of patients was very effective in all distances and give very good objective and subjective results
