Purpose:
Evaluate the wound changes depending on initial incision size (1.8 mm-2.0 mm, 2.2mm) during MICS using the ASICO Royale injector with D cartridge for IOL implantation.
Setting:
Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institute, Saint Petersburg Branch.
Methods:
The phacoemulsification procedure was performed for cataract removing in 130 eyes using torsional ultrasound through incisions of 1.8 mm, 2.0 mm 2.2 mm.
We measured the incision width at different stages of the procedure (before IOL implantation and after implantation of IOL) using a standard incision gauge with 0.1 mm increment. Patients were divided into three groups depending on the incision initial size (1.8mm 2.0 mm 2.2 mm). The spherical power of the implanted IOL varied up to 28 Dpi and in all cases the implantation was performed using ASICO Royale injector with D cartridge.
Results:
A slight increase of the incision size was noted in all three groups preceding the implantation. The difference was in average 0.1mm±0.05 and it was not statistically significant.
After implantation of IOL the greatest increase of the incision was noted in the group with 1.8 mm incision compared with the groups of 2.0 mm and 2.2 mm. The difference was statistically significant and it was 0.3±0.1 in the group with an incision of 1.8 mm, 0.15±0.05 in the group with an incision of 2.0 mm and 0.1±0.05 in the group with an incision of 2.2 mm (p <0,05).
Conclusions:
The final size of the incision in all three groups differed. A dependence was observed: the smaller was the initial incision, the smaller was the final incision. Before the implantation measures didnt show statistically significant expansion of the incision in all three groups.
Dimension after the IOL implantation in all three groups was showed the statistically significant enlargement of the incision with the evaluation of spherical power of implanted IOL.
