Purpose:
To compare an innovative hydrophobic acrylic IOL delivery system with an existing delivery system
Setting:
Isala Clinics, Zwolle, the Netherlands
Methods:
A widely known D cartridge is mostly used to inject hydrophobic acrylic IOLs with a wound assisted technique through 2.2-2.4 mm incisions. The wound stretch through these incision sizes has been shown to be limited and is widely accepted. An automated and uninterrupted injection system induced less wound stretch compared to double hand screw type injection. Injection through smaller incisions cause more wound stretch and are not commonly accepted.
An innovative hydrophobic acrylic IOL delivery system was evaluated in pig and donor eyes. The main innovative features of the new cartridge system are 1) dedicated wings behind the cartridge tip, ensuring a fixed and controlled entry of the tip into the corneal incision. 2) a specific cartridge lumen design, which reduces the the potential of the IOL getting blocked by Descemets membrane. The overall size of the cartridge tip is smaller.
Results:
Laboratory data show a reduced wound stretch compared to D cartridge.
IOL injection in the laboratory setting through (sub) 2.0 mm incisions were successful.
Conclusions:
A new innovative hydrophobic acrylic IOL delivery system shows reduced corneal incision stretch and looks very promising for very small incision wound assisted hydrophobic acrylic IOL injection.
