Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the effectiveness of new ciliary sulcus diameter measurement method with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in patients with high myopia

Setting:

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex – Federal State Institution, Moscow, Russian Federation

Methods:

Thirty two myopic eyes of 32 patients (mean age, 28 years; range, 19-50; mean spherical equivalent (SE), -13.12 D; range, -6.25 - -21.50) were included into this prospective comparative nonrandomized study. Initially in each case horizontal ciliary sulcus diameter was precisely measured with UBM by the skilled operator and taken as a control value. After that the same parameter was assessed twice by each of two other independent skilled operators using the new AS-OCT measurement algorithm. Finally we compared UBM measurement results with the AS-OCT and evaluated intra- and intersession coefficients of repeatability for the obtained AS-OCT data.

Results:

Mean ciliary sulcus diameter values with UBM and AS-OCT were 12.35±0.47 mm (range, 11.39 - 13.25) and 12.36±0.52 mm (range, 11.40 - 13.35) accordingly (P>0.05). Mean difference between UBM and AS-OCT data was 0.01±0.10 mm (range, -0.24 - 0.15). Intrasession coefficients of repeatability were 0.11 mm and 0.17 mm for the first and the second AS-OCT operator accordingly (P<0.05), while intersession repeatability reached 0.13 mm.

Conclusions:

AS-OCT can be effectively used to measure ciliary sulcus diameter in patients with high myopia. The new ciliary sulcus diameter assessment method showed high level of precision and repeatability.
