Purpose:
To evaluate and compare central (CCT) and peripheral corneal thickness (PCT) measurements using rotating Scheimpflug camera combined with a Placido disk (Sirius) and ultrasound (US) pachymetry in healthy corneas.
Setting:
Nile Refractive Center, Sohag City, Egypt.
Prospective, observational, cross-sectional study.
Methods:
CCT and PCT in 437 healthy eyes of 437 patients was measured by a single examiner. Three acquisitions by Sirius rotating Scheimpflug camera were obtained. Ultrasound pachymetry was acquired for the central 3mm of the cornea and 4 peripheral points at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o"clock 3 times for each point.
Results:
: CCT by Sirius and US pachymetry were 532.83±38.69 µm and 522.51±35.57 µm respectively. While the PCT results for were respectively; superior 573.9±43.54 µm, 588.7 ±42.1µm, nasal 565.8± 42.1, 579.6± 41.3 µm, inferior 568.9± 39.1, 569.6 ± 38.12959µm and temporal 572.9± 43.4, 559.3± 36.3µm.
Conclusions:
: In normal corneas the CCT measurements by the Sirius and US are highly correlated. Although the Sirius tended to overestimate the central corneal thickness values and to a greater extent the peripheral corneal thickness.
