Purpose:
To compare the development of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and frequency of Nd:YAG capsulotomy between two microincision intraocular lenses (IOLs) 4 years after surgery.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria
Methods:
Sixty patients (120 eyes) were included in this randomized trial with intra-patient comparison. Each patient randomly received a Y-60H IOL (HOYA Surgical) in one eye and a MI60 IOL (Bausch&Lomb) in the contralateral eye. Eyes were examined 1 week, 2 years and 4 years after surgery. Digital retro-illuminated images of each eye were evaluated using a fully automated quantification of after-cataract software (AQUA). The Nd:YAG laser rate was noted.
Results:
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) was higher for the MI60 IOL group than for the Y-60H IOL group in eyes previously not treated with Nd:YAG 2 years years after cataract surgery: An objective PCO score of 1.11 [0; 6.30] was found for the MI60 IOL group and of 0.075 [0; 3.89] for the Y-60H IOL group (p=0.006). At the 4-year follow-up, the MI60 IOL group presented with statistically significantly higher YAG rates than the Y-60H IOL group: 77% compared to 50% (p = 0.012).
Conclusions:
Both MICS IOLs showed higher YAG capsulotomie rates at the 4-year follow-up than has beem previously reported for IOLs of similar material and design.
