Abstract Details

Purpose:

Description of the clinical outcomes 2 years after implantation of the same platform in two different materials.

Setting:

Ophthalomology, Clinique Beausoleil, Montpellier, France

Methods:

This prospective study includes 178 consecutive eyes with age related cataract implanted with 2 monofocal IOLs with the same “POD” design and with two different materials, one new hydrophobic material and one 26% hydrophilic well-known material. The groups were compared using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov for the axial length and corneal power to achieve the comparability of the groups. Clinical outcomes include here the visual acuity, refraction, capsule condition, YAG rate, material condition duration of postoperative inflammation and prolonged treatment. YAG rates and material stability were assessed with Mann Wittney test on the survival analysis as the follow-up were not comparable.

Results:

All surgeries had been uneventfull. The inflammatory condition was satisfactory in both groups. No Glistening appears in the hydrophobic group (nor in the control group). No YAG in the hydrophobic group and in the hydrophilic YAG after 2 years. After 36 months of average follow-up, hydrophilic group presented 11.1% of YAG. Both materials remained stable and in particular, no glistening appeared in the hydrophobic group.

Conclusions:

Longer outcomes are necessary to determine the effect of the material on the PCO. Nevertheless, the new hydrophobic material remained perfectly clear after 2 years. The IOL design was appropriate in any eye.
