Purpose:
In this study anterior and posterior capsular opacification (PCO) of Tecnis ZCB00 is compared intraindividually with the Alcon Acrysof SN60AT intraocular lens after 12 months of implantation.
Setting:
Academic Teaching Hospital of St. John, Vienna, Austria
Methods:
168 eyes of 84 patients with bilateral cataract were randomized to receive a Tecnics ZCB00 or a Acrysof SN60AT intraocular lens. The alternate IOL was implanted in the other eye in the same session by the same surgeon. Both study lenses are single piece, hydrophobic acrylate, 13 mm total diameter and sharp edged. Tecnis IOL has 360° circular edge in order to reduce PCO. Postoperative follow-up was 1day and 1 year. Posterior capsule opacification was evaluated by digital retroillumination photographs with the EPCO software.
Results:
There were no intra- or postoperative complications detected. Acrysof IOL showed statistically significant higher Anterior Capsule Opacification. Most of the Acrysof IOLs showed glistenings after 1 year(% 53.2). EPCO PCO scores was not statistically significant different.
Conclusions:
Both IOLs had relatively low rates of PCO after one year. However higher rates of the glistenings of the Acrysof might be disturbing.
