Purpose:
To evaluate the long-term effect of a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL), AcrySof® SN60AT, on the development of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) following cataract surgery
Setting:
Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre, Raghudeep Eye Clinic, Gurukul Road, Memnagar, Ahmedabad
Methods:
A prospective evaluation was done on 390 consecutive eyes of 390 patients up to 5 years after cataract surgery. Postoperatively, digital retroillumination photographic documentation was performed at 1, 12, 36, and 60 months and analyzed for PCO using Evaluation of Posterior Capsule Opacification (EPCO) software; EPCO scores and area were calculated. The development of PCO was studied within the capsulorhexis margin and the central 3.0 mm optic area. The influence of the anterior capsule (total-on and part-on) on PCO was also analyzed at various time-points. Freidman test and Mann-Whitney test were applied.
Results:
Within capsulorhexis margin, EPCO Scores at 1, 12, 36 and 60 months were 0.01±0.03, 0.06±0.16, 0.19±0.43, 0.20±0.38, while EPCO areas were 0.01±0.03, 0.06±0.16, 0.13±0.23, 0.13±0.22.Within the central 3.0 mm optic area, EPCO Scores were 0.01±0.00, 0.01±0.07, 0.06±0.23, 0.05±0.21 while EPCO areas were 0.00±0.00, 0.01±0.07, 0.05±0.16, 0.04±0.14. A significant increase in PCO noticed upto 36 months (P<0.001) while no significant development found between 36-60 months. With total-on, within capsulorhexis margin a significantly less EPCO Scores (0.00±0.01, 0.18±0.45, 0.17±0.39) and EPCO Areas (0.00±0.01, 0.11±0.22, 0.12±0.22) found against part-on, EPCO Scores (0.02±0.05, 0.23±0.36, 0.26±0.38: P<0.001) and EPCO areas (0.02±0.05, 0.17±0.22, 0.19±0.23: P<0.001)
Conclusions:
With AcrySof® SN60AT IOL, significant increase in PCO was observed up to 3 years. PCO stabilized between 3 to 5 years with no evidence of a difference at 5 years post-cataract surgery. Less PCO was found with the total-on cover of the anterior capsule on IOL optic within the capsulorhexis margin
