Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare posterior capsule opacification three years after surgery in pseudophakic eyes implanted after standard co-axial phacoemulsification with hydrophobic acrylic, hydrophilic acrylic and hydrophilic acrylic with hydrophobic surface intraocular lenses

Setting:

Kalra Hospital, Kirti Nagar, New Delhi

Methods:

A prospective randomized comparative study was undertaken on 60 eyes of 60 patients with age related cataract that underwent standard co-axial phacoemulsification. 20 eyes each received hydrophobic acrylic, hydrophilic acrylic and hydrophilic acrylic with a hydrophobic surface intraocular lens. All lenses were aspheric, square edged and single-piece. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, uveitis or any other ocular co-morbidity were excluded. Patients were followed up at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after surgery. Evaluation of posterior capsule opacification area and neodymium:YAG capsulotomy rates were the outcome measures

Results:

The percentage posterior capsule opacification area and Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates in eyes with hydrophilic acrylic lenses were higher than in eyes that received other two types of lenses at 1, 2 and 3 years follow up (p < .05). There was no statistically significant difference (p > .05) in the percentage posterior capsule opacification area in patients implanted with hydrophobic acrylic or hydrophilic acrylic with hydrophobic surface intraocular lenses at the end of 3 year follow-up. Number of Nd:YAG capsulotomies were 1 and 2 respectively in eyes implanted with hydrophobic acrylic and hydrophilic acrylic with hydrophobic surface intraocular lenses

Conclusions:

Eyes implanted with hydrophilic acrylic lenses had early opacification of posterior capsule. However, eyes that received hydrophilic acrylic lenses with hydrophobic surface had posterior capsule opacification and Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates comparable to those with hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses
